Spurring Sportsmanship Spirit

The Residents Committee of Perumahan 5 Kedai Area Neighbourhood Watch (KRT) had organised a Closed Badminton Championship in June 2010 at the village Open Hall. The objective of the competition was to enhance the spirit of sportsmanship especially among village youths. According to Salamian Surip, Chairman of Perumahan 5 Kedai Area Neighbourhood Watch, a total of 100 entrants had participated in 20 doubles matches which were played on two courts. The participants were divided into four categories namely, 10 years old and below, 15 years old and below, 16 years old and above and senior citizens. More than 100 village residents were present to witness the competition which began at 9.00am to 11.30pm. The competition was based on league system. Participation fees for students were RM3.00 while adults were charged RM2.00.

Salamian was of the opinion that the competition was a suitable venue to produce new talents and second liners in the field of badminton. He did not deny that some of the participants were talented as they had attended training sessions in their schools while others are members of badminton clubs. The championship had enabled them to utilise their leisure time beneficially. The champion, runner-up and third place winners were presented with trophies. The final game was attended by Norhisham Ismail, Youth Chief of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) Gelang Patah Division. Salamian further added that the Area Neighbourhood Watch plans to set up a badminton club in future. To date, the participants will continue with their training on every Saturday night.
