Urban Jungle Park

The realisation of Central Johor Bahru Municipal Council (MPJBT) Urban Jungle, which conceptualises environmental friendly urban jungle, is made possible through the touch of Shahrulizam Abdul Rashid, MPJBT Landscape Architect. Located in Taman Mutiara Rini, it has 3,200 tropical forest trees growing in the 25-hectare area. With 200 species of tropical forest trees (arboretum), the urban jungle also has a lake to meet the interest of youth as well as fishing activities. In fact, MPJBT is currently constructing three futsal courts and an area for extreme sports. With the availability of recreational facilities, including 0.4 hectare of children’s playground which can accommodate 100 children at any one time, the urban jungle has satisfied the urban jungle concept as expected by the urban dwellers.

The recreational centre is further beautified with the construction of 24 Rumah Limas or traditional Johor Malay wooden houses which represents the 24 local authorities (PBT) in Johor, Johor’s identity. It can be used for seminars, courses, workshops or gatherings. Costing RM24 million, Dataran Sekapur Sirih has been built by MPJBT Urban Jungle to facilitate the organisation of various events and programmes by departments and agencies, including Independence Day celebration. YAB Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, Menteri Besar of Johor, had officiated the urban jungle’s opening and launched the book, “Hutan Bandar MPJBT”. The latter provides detailed information about the recreational centre. (KK14: 23 April 2012 – By: Zanariah Abdullah)
