Foster Child Programme

The Kampung Kuala Linggi Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) together with the undergraduates from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang had organised a one-week Foster Child Programme last April. The programme, which was organised for the first time at Kampung Kuala Linggi, was aimed at fostering relationship between the villagers and the university undergraduates concerned.

The programme that involved the participation of about 121 undergraduates including officers from USM as well as Kampung Kuala Linggi villagers had went well. The villager selected to be the foster family to two or three undergraduates were responsible for the provision of facilities such as lodging, food as well as organising family activity together.

Most of the activities in the programme were decided by the participants and the families involved. For example, a foster family whose livelihood was a fisherman would take the foster child to sea in his fishing boat. This was the golden opportunity for the undergraduates who were not from a fisherman's family to gain the experience of fishing, something which they had not done before.

Thus, the relationship between the villagers and the undergraduates could be seen as a positive step at introducing Kampung Kuala Linggi to the outside world besides recognising the customs and culture of the local community at close range. The experience with the foster family enabled the undergraduates to develop mature thinking, that is to have critical and rational thinking always. (Last update: 9 April 2009)
