Visit To Seri Perdana

The Village Heads and Lun Bawang tribes from Ba’kelalan and Bario from Sarawak were pleased with the opportunity to visit the Seri Perdana in November 2011. They were feted to a luncheon that was made quite special with the presence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak. Also present were Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Ahmad Hamidi, Defence Minister; and YB Datuk Henry Sum, Lawas Member of Parliament. The delegation which was led by Sum had met Najib to convey the thanks and appreciation of the Ba’kelalan and Bario community to the government for building a long-awaited new road in the area. As informed by Sum, Ba’kelalan and Lawas areas had experienced rapid development unlike before whereby the area was quite inaccessible due to geographical conditions.

The construction of the road was completed by the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) through the Jiwa Murni project whose allocation was channelled via the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU). Sum also urged the government to continue efforts to provide basic amenities such as electricity and water supply alternatives to all areas that have not received such facilities. He also hoped that Najib would give due consideration to their applications such as Lawas Airport facilities to replace the existing airport which was flood-prone, building a secondary school in the highlands of Ba’kelalan and a technical school in Lawas. The meeting ended with a photography session with the leaders. (KK12: 2 December 2011 – By: Zanariah Abdullah)
