As Malaysia moves toward a developed country status in 2020, our energy requirement will be veryintensive. As it is, presently almost half of the energy consumption in the country is in the industrial, residential and commercial sectors. The commercial and residential buildings in Malaysia account for about 13% of total energy consumption and 48% of the country’s electricity consumption. Hence there is a strong need to apply energy efficient strategies in lowering the building’s energy consumption. MS 1525:2001 Code of Practice on Energy Efficiency and use of Renewable Energy for Non Residential Buildings was developed to provide the best practice in energy efficiency for buildings. This standard is very useful as it provides minimum standards for the design of new, existing buildings as well as methods of determining their compliance.

Though energy efficient buildings are given different names: Low Energy Office or LEO, Zero Energy Building, Sustainable and Green building, they all carry the same primary objective i.e. reducing the use of energy and efficient utilization of energy source. The cost to construct an Energy Efficient building could be as much as 10-15% higher than the conventional design but the significantly low operating costs will more than offset this.

It is vital to the point that the country needs to construct energy efficient buildings in the future to safe guard our depletion of energy resources. Energy efficiency in building is such an urgent concern that cooperation among all individuals involved in the construction industry including architects, engineers, interior designers, researchers is of utmost importance. These professionals who typically work in isolation, and sometimes have contradicting views, now have to sit together, discuss and come to a consensus. Their thoughts and ideas must be molded into one collective force to bring about the creation of energy efficient buildings.

Saving energy use in buildings requires cooperation. Everyone from architects, engineers, interior designers, and researchers play important roles to mold ideas into the creation of energy efficient buildings. Malaysia has already proven its prowess to take on the challenge of designing EE buildings:

  • Kuala Lumpur Securities Commission – Winner of the ASEAN Energy Award for Energy Efficient Buildings, the KLSC building shines as an example of technical know-how and innovation that meets world standards in EE design and function.
  • Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia Building – Designed to showcase readily available and cost effective energy efficient features, the MECM building in Putrajaya stands as a replicable model for others to follow.
  • Pusat Tenaga Malaysia Building – Based on the ZEO concept, the PTM building aims to spearhead the realization of utilization of energy efficiency and renewable energy i.e. solar and become a national icon to promote future endeavours in viable building energy management.

These successful examples merge high technology with energy efficiency. They represent the future for buildings in Malaysia as the shift to energy management encompasses all aspects of architectural design and construction in the modern workplace.
